The past few weeks I've been a bit pre-occupied with several tasks and pursuits, so I haven't been blogging much, although I have been busy. About a month ago, I bought an Epiphone Viola bass from Blue Mountain Music. It was the culmination of several months' exploration and investigation of bass instruments that began with an electric...
Finally finished my site for vintage ukulele music, a place where I can write a bit about the music, composers and performers from the 1920s and 30s. And it's a place where I can show off (and sell) my collection of song sheets and song books scanned to PDF. I have developed a real passion for the music of this era since I started playing the...
There's an old joke that goes, "What's the difference between (insert a city name here) and a cup of yogurt?" The answer is, of course, that a cup of yogurt has culture. I first heard this with Calgary as the city, back when I lived in Banff. Not very flattering, of course.
Collingwood, on the other hand, has oodles of culture....

ACCORDING TO THE 2006 CENSUS, the average age in Collingwood is 46. Almost 30% of residents are between 45 and 64, and just over 22% are 65 and over. More than half the local population in Simcoe County is older than 45.* That means we are locally, on average, a greying population.
So why do some local radio stations play music aimed at the...

Been thinking a lot about bass lately. Not the fish, but rather the musical instrument. I want to play one, at least a lot better than I can now.
Back in the mid-60s, I was in a garage band. They already had two guitarists, so I sort-of played bass, but I played it on the low strings of my six-string electric guitar (a Kent, as I recall). I went...

New uke arrived yesterday - three business days from Nova Scotia, which is pretty good for Canada Post. Hadn't expected it until Friday, and the Canada Post site even said it wouldn't arrive until the 16th, so I was pleasantly surprised.
Only had a couple of hours with it, but I posted some preliminary comments on my ukulele review site....

I just made a deal to buy a used baritone uke from a fellow member of the Ukulele Underground forums, in Nova Scotia.

It's a handmade baritone, all mahogany, made by Aaron Kleim of Beansprout ukuleles. The current owner also had a passive pickup...

Haven't had a lot of time this past two weeks to practice music, because of the election, my new part-time job, and working for clients on Websites. But late last week I got my Jupiter Creek baritone in the mail. It's mostly been sitting around waiting for me, but I finally got to take a few photos, yesterday, for my upcoming review.

I've been a bit involved in the campaigning of late, and neglectful of making posts about my ukulele passion. So here we go with a few recent items...
About two weeks ago I received a mango tenor ukulele from Mainland, in a stunning faux-alligator hard shell case. I spent the following weekend with it, playing it almost exclusively and...

Ever since I started playing the ukulele, I've been delving deeper into the science and mystery of acoustics. For the past two and a half years I've been trying to understand how and why a ukulele - or any stringed instrument - generates sound. What factors influence the sounds we hear, and who can changing one or more element change that...
