My speech at the Chamber AC meeting

A friend recorded this for me and I posted it on YouTube today. The sound is a trifle murky but it's not too bad. The Rogers TV version is a little clearer (it's on TV again at noon, today). My speech is printed in a post below if you care to read it as well.

I note that Rick Lloyd...

My 2010 all-candidates' speech

[i]I was asked recently what I said in my speech at the AC meeting this week, by someone who was unable to attend. While I know the meeting will be broadcast on Rogers TV this weekend and several other times before the election, I am posting my speech here for any one to read and comment on. I will also be posting my responses to some media...

Survived the first all-candidates' meeting

I survived the first big public meeting for council candidates, yesterday afternoon. It's a misnomer, of course, to call it an all-candidates' meeting when only a portion of the candidates are present. Yesterday afternoon, it was only the council candidates - 20 of us (John Kitchen bowed out last moment over a family emergency out of...

Local businesses give failing grades to council

I got a copy of a recent report from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) today that reviewed how some of its Ontario members saw their local governments. The good news is that Collingwood was not perceived as the worst. The bad news is that in every category surveyed, we failed to live up to expectations.

While the survey is...

Questions about the voters' lists

I've had a few calls this week from, and had one on-street conversation with, people who worried they were not on the voters' list. I was also surprised that several people I spoke with this past week didn't understand that this was another mail-in ballot. Some of them didn't know anything about mail-in ballots at all.

One woman...

Voter education and social networking

I was reading an interesting piece on the Municipal Information Network this morning. Today, the City of Markham will unveil its "innovative 2010 elections Voter Awareness Campaign."

Markham offers residents the choice of voting online or in person. As you may recall, this council would not consider alternate voting methods, or a ward...

Poll removed - too many errors

I've removed the poll here because it generated errors for too many people. Sorry. Worked for me and a few folk, but not everyone. Scoop has one on the EEU that I recommend you use instead.

No more free parking, October 1

I was the lone voice, last night, speaking out against going back to paid parking downtown. Of course you knew it was inevitable - not just from the comments made about by my colleagues in the past, but the town erected faux-heritage parking meters on the side streets, long before the debate about whether we would drop paid parking even came to...

Chamber changes all-candidates' meeting

A significant change was made today to the Chamber's all-candidates' meeting, Sept. 22: council candidates have been bumped to 3:30 p.m., instead of the evening.

This will make it difficult for working people in this community to attend, including candidates themselves. Very unfortunate arrangement or council candidates, who also have to...

It's all been my fault...

I'm always to blame. Now it seems the reason council was "divisive" this term is because I failed to work with "the council the public chose and not the council they wanted." "They" being Deputy Mayor Cooper and me.

Thus sayeth the mayor in an article in today's Collingwood Connection, headlined "Carrier...
