Brother, I Can't Spare You the Time

Brother, Can You Spare a Dime is one of the most memorable songs of the 1930s, written at the height of the Great Depression, by the son of Jewish immigrants, Yip Harburg, with music by composer - and another Jewish immigrant - Jay Gorney. It was written in 1931, and later included in a musical, New Americana, in 1932. I thought it might...

Ideas for local government 2.0

The most interesting seminars I attended at the recent FCM were about what's been dubbed "government 2.0" - government that's open, accountable, and uses the technological tools to create interactive communication with its residents. It's as much a philosophy as a practice. But it requires an administration and bureaucracy...

Toronto: patios, buskers and an animated downtown

I just returned from a few days in Toronto, attending the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) annual convention. Picked up a lot of good ideas (especially around open government and open data) and information, which I'll post at a later point. War of words: Carrier vs Assaff continues

Got an email late yesterday with the mayor's comments in response to Steve Assaff's comments on the mayor's comments about the Admiral Collingwood development... got that? Anyway, I got the press release the mayor sent from an outside source, since it appears council and staff wasn't copied with it.

The mayor sent out his...

Referendum: 2010

I plan to bring a notice of motion to the table, Monday night, asking for a referendum question to be added to the 2010 ballot.

My motion will be to request that the 2010 ballot include the question, "Should Collingwood implement a ward system for future municipal elections?"

Given the refusal of the mayor (and his supporters) to allow...

Throwing stones?

You have to shake your head and wonder, some days. Today was one for me. There on the front page of the EB is a quote from the mayor aimed right at me:
[quote]"We can in this election campaign, members of council can throw stones at each other, or we can...
