SUVs and the dumbing-down process

I have come to the conclusion, after much observation and contemplation, that SUV drivers have chosen their vehicle to compensate for other shortcomings in their lives.

Just like some short people compensate for their lack of height by being tyrants or powermongers, or by wearing high-heeled shoes, SUV drivers seem to compensate...

Stumbling along in the murky code

I'm an idiot. At least I feel that way sometimes. I'm trying to make some modifications to this forum and find myself wading through the quagmire of CSS and PHP coding. It's getting frustrating.

It must be an age thing because I read forum posts on other sites where users say they can make something work - and when I...

Why believe anything?

Where is there compassion in religion? Where is the need for religion in compassion ?

I think if you take a closer look at Buddhism, you'll find one its focal points is compassion. In fact, the main Buddhist leaders today make a big point about compassion in our...

Eating meat and Buddhism - a reply

This is my response to a thread about Buddhism and eating meat. on E-Sangha:

[quote name='Abhaya' date='Oct 25 2004, 01:40 PM']There is nothing said about eating meat or not eating meat in any of anybody's writings, teachings, sutras, sayings, apart from some stuff which...

[indent]Does compassion stop flowing from us when it reaches the boundaries of our self interest? Does compassion end when it inconveniences us to make the effort, or takes too much time, or doesn't get witnessed by others?

Is compassion only a momentary thing, a showpiece to impress others, used sparingly and only when...

Do we need a Governor General?

Do we need a Governor General? Adrienne Clarkson has proven a high-living, high-spending representative ($19 million annual budget, up from $11 million in a few short years, staff increased by >45% to 180, additional costs for security, etc.). She has brought the role of the GG into focus: do we need one? Can we afford...

Buddha's death reconsidered

Shakyamuni himself died from eating tainted pork.... I read that in a post on Belief Net recently. Here is my response, somewhat edited and expanded:

To clarify, this is an interpretation of a rare Sanskrit word, translated from a long-unspoken language into English - but its exact definition is still disputed among...

Meat and compassion

Aside from some very primitive cultures, no one has to kill to live any more. We are not savages in the wilderness (most of us, anyway). For the most part, people choose to do so, instead of pursuing alternatives. Or choose to pretend their hands are not washed in blood - they choose to have someone do the killing for them....

Homophobe

Homophobe. To most people the word today means someone who is either afraid of gay/homosexual people or issues, dislikes or is opposed to them.

Wrong! The word drives me crazy.

The word homophobe is composed of two well-defined Greek roots:[list]
[*]Homo...

Another thought...
Many forums become sites of great confrontation as posters line up on sides of contentious issues: politics (especially American - unusual given the remarkable sameness of the two parties), religion, abortion, evolution, social and human rights, vegetarianism, the IQ of SUV drivers… blogs are more controllable in the...
