The future of parking enforcement?

Now while we don't have the budget for this type of equipment right now, it's probably coming sometime in the future for bylaw enforcement. It is worth following up to find out if the improvements in efficiency pay a dividend that helps counter the cost, and how long the pay-back period is.

This story from the Municipal Information...

The Great Graffiti Paintout today

[color="#000000"]Are you tired of that ugly tagging and graffiti defacing our beautiful, downtown heritage buildings? You can help get rid of it, and at the same time send a message that this sort of vandalism and visual pollution won't be tolerated here any more.

Paula Lehr has organized the Great Graffiti Paintout for today, from...

A marketing idea for Collingwood and the downtown

I came across a marketing concept when I was last in Toronto and I think it could work very well here for both Collingwood and the BIA. Most of us are already familiar with the standard promotion racks that hold flyers and cards for local events, places to visit, visitor maps and so on. This is more of a downsized version, but in many ways more...

The BIA's Titanic meets the town's iceberg

By now, most readers will be aware of the resignation of the BIA's chair over the ongoing dispute between the organization and the town. That head butting stems from a disagreement over the terms and conditions in an agreement jointly signed by the town and BIA and the province.

I've written about some of this previously, but, of course...

BIA, town still at loggerheads over broken contract, BIA rep challenged

Just before we went in camera, Monday, I asked Councillor Jeffrey if she had voted to pull the the BIA out of the contract it signed with the town. She said yes and indicated it was a unanimous vote (although it was not made clear who was at that meeting).

At that point, the mayor took over and shoved the rest of the discussion behind closed...

What's with the BIA?

What's up with the BIA these days? As a previously ardent supporter of the BIA, the organization's latest moves have both confounded and bothered me. I'm still a supporter of the downtown merchants, but my respect for the executive has dropped a few notches of late....

Desperation or genuine concern for the downtown?

I had to wonder whether some of council's sudden outpouring of concern for the extra costs borne by retaillers and restaurateurs over the new licence fees was really a genuine turn-around show of empathy for them, or just electioneering in face of growing public dissatisfaction over this...

A little civil disobedience

Scoop and I enjoyed a little act of civil disobedience, Saturday morning, as we drank a hot beverage at a table on the main street sidewalk that was clearly not within either the strictly approved and restricted sidewalk patio or sidewalk café zones.

The empty downtown

I was accused of taking my last pictures of an empty downtown on a weekday, when, of course, it would be quiet. So here are two photos taken Saturday, July 10, a few mintues after noon (just as the farmers' market was starting to wind down). Note the lack of patios and the lack of pedestrians - which means the lack of customers. The...

Patio issue defused - for now

The patio at Duncan's restaurant can stay where it is - for now. The councillors who wanted to repeal the old patio bylaw decided at the last moment to defer the motion (moved by Councillor Jeffrey, seconded by Councillor Labelle). Had it passed, it would have made all downtown patios illegal until (or if) a new patio bylaw comes into...
