Some thoughts on teams and teamwork at the table

[font="Verdana"][size="2"]In a municipal election, you don't elect a team. You elect individuals. Teams and teamwork may come later, and will coalesce around the mayor - if, of course, the mayor sets the appropriate tone. The mayor needs to set the example that encourages and nurtures a culture of teamwork. That didn't...

Notice of motion to drop charges against Duncan's

I made a notice of motion, at last night's council meeting, to drop the charges recently laid against Duncan's Restaurant for erecting an illegal patio on the Hurontario Street sidewalk. It was, of course, beside the building, not curbside.

Since a new council will likely change this bylaw very soon after getting inaugurated, it seems...

The count is growing as ballots come in

As of 15:47 yesterday, the number of ballots at town hall received was 5,132. Of these, only 33 were discarded because they were lacking a declaration, a signature or a ballot.

That 5,132 is, according to the town's count of eligible voters (16,408), 31.28% of the total that could come in if everyone voted. Last election, the total was just...

Changes for Council's TV coverage (on Rogers TV)

I received an email today that says Rogers TV will air the Collingwood Council meetings live, starting at 5 p.m., from October 18th.

This is a change from the past practice of delaying transmission by two hours and showing previously-recorded coverage (starting at 7 p.m.). If you record the meetings, set your timer for 5 p.m., Monday.

Just a...

My responses to the Connection's questions

The following is the email I replied to The Collingwood Connection in response to its "Questions for candidates for Collingwood council" sent to all candidates for inclusion in its election coverage. Some of the answers were published in the paper, over two issues but here is what I wrote to them all in one:

[b]1) If elected, would...

Last gasp polls close at EEU

If you haven't seen the results of Scoop's last poll on the 2010 municipal election, you should check the results at the East End Underground (link below).

Overall, I think his poll represents a good snapshot of what I've been hearing, and what I saw as the audience reaction at the Chamber all-candidates' meetings. A lot of...

Businesses in Victoria get their say on city services

From the Municipal Information Network:
"Businesses to Provide Input on City of Victoria Services for First Time

Victoria, October 12, 2010 - For the first time since the City has conducted citizen surveys, businesses will also be polled this year to determine their perception of City services. Victoria residents and business owners...

The Second All-Candidates' Meeting and the Debenture

Wednesday night the second of the all-candidates' meetings was held, this time hosted by the Collingwood Connection, again held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 63.

The format was quite different from the Chamber meeting (or properly meetings, since it was split into two parts to accommodate the large number of council candidates). There...

Saving the Silver Creek Wetlands

This week's news release about the Silver Creek Wetlands is a good news item, albeit a trifle vague, but with a bit of political wrangling on the side to make it interesting to political followers.

Saving the wetlands - or at least the environmentally-protected portion of it - has been a goal of the last two terms of council, but has been on...

How much does it cost to live here? A lot...

How much money do you need to live in Collingwood? A lot. And more is required every year, it seems, as user fees, taxes and utility bills continue to climb.

I received a sobering report, recently, about the costs of local housing compared with typical, local wages. It's an eye-opener for all of us, particularly our newcomer council...
