Computer crash and how to recover

[indent]You never realize how fragile your computer system really is until you’ve had a crash.

Last Saturday, a P4 system in the store, a computer that has worked flawlessly for the past year and a bit, refused to boot.

[quote]“Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:...

Standing still or keeping pace?

[indent]When my grandfather passed away at the age of 94 several years ago, I pondered how he had seen come into existence most of the modern technology we take for granted.

It’s difficult to comprehend that in a single lifetime, a person saw the spread of the telegraph, automobile, electricity, radio, television, the airplane,...

Dags & Willow

[indent]Cheese. I love cheese, cheese in all its rich and varied forms and styles, hard and soft, infused with herbs or wine, aged or young, cow and goat's milk. Far too many people miss the delicious range of delights by sticking to a handful of mediocre, middle-of-the-road cheese - not to sharp, not too strong, not too...

Musings of a pedestrian

I've been walking a lot these days. Walking to work, walking to the mall, walking downtown, along street, sidewalks and trails, going shopping, sometimes just strolling. Saturday alone we walked to the mall and back, and then downtown and back, with a little meandering up and down the streets in between.

Losing an old friend

My dog died Thursday night. Or more truthfully, sometime near midnight, we stood in a veterinarian's office and watched as he administered the shot that would put her to sleep, the final sleep that would end her life and give her peace.

It was a heart-breaking moment. Katie was a Papillon, more than 14, and had been with us...

Some final thoughts

It's taken a while to put my thoughts about my father in order. I haven't had a lot of time to think about his passing of late, what with all the meetings, events, committees and other municipal responsibilities. It's almost like I've put him in a separate room in myself, so I could go and meditate on him when the...

The end of the line

I got the call Tuesday morning, just before noon. My father passed away. It's taken this time to be able to write those words without getting caught up in the grief of it. It still catches me in the throat when I speak of it.

Susan and I last saw him Sunday. I knew then we would never see him again. My brother, who stopped by...

Time's ticking

Dad's hours from death. He hasn't had any food for 14 days now. I am reminded of Gandhi's great fast. But for dad, it's not a voluntary event, merely the last phase in the end of his life. He's weak and slips in and out of coherency, unable to stay awak for more than a few minutes at a time.

The doctor removed...

Mortality redux...

Quote

In my father, I observed mildness of temper, and unchangeable resolution in the things which he had determined after due deliberation; and no vainglory in the things men call honours; and love of labour and perseverance...

I was thinking of those lines from Marcus Aurelius today as I sat and watched my father in his...
