Election Raises Concerns for Ontario's Municipalities

Two questions about the aftermath of the upcoming provincial election are on the minds of councillors in most of Ontario’s municipalities: will there be downloading? And will there be another round of infrastructure funding?

Downloading provincial services onto municipalities was done under Conservative Premier Mike Harris in the late...

Dear Conservative...

Dear Conservative. That's how the recent email messages from candidate and former mayor Chris Carrier begin, as they launch into the fine art of self-promotion, a craft that skillfully blends - and bends - truth and fiction. To date I've been the recipient of four of these epistles, somewhat surprising because I must surely rank among the...

Questions about the voters' lists

I've had a few calls this week from, and had one on-street conversation with, people who worried they were not on the voters' list. I was also surprised that several people I spoke with this past week didn't understand that this was another mail-in ballot. Some of them didn't know anything about mail-in ballots at all.

The mayoralty race kicked off by Sandra Cooper

The mayoralty race got started today (Sunday) when Deputy Mayor Sandra Cooper held a meet-and-greet at the Legion. And if that meeting was an indication of the trend among local voters, I'd suggest Sandra already has a lengthy lead against her competition.

Got some election signs out today

I saw signs for Cooper, Lloyd (Kevin), Lloyd (Rick) and Jeffrey out already....

Albatrosses and election 2010

An uncredited photo from the mayor's news "blog": two election hopefuls and their albatross. Looks like a big, happy family. Once upon a time, it was. The two councillors beside him were ardent supporters of the mayor and pretty much followed his lead back when this council was newly elected. You could basically count on a six-three...

A pointed message for the election

Sean, of Duncan's Cafe in Cllingwood, sent me this ad he plans to run in the local newspapers. He gave me permission to post it here.

I don't think I need to comment - the ad says it all.

Referendum: 2010

I plan to bring a notice of motion to the table, Monday night, asking for a referendum question to be added to the 2010 ballot.

My motion will be to request that the 2010 ballot include the question, "Should Collingwood implement a ward system for future municipal elections?"

Given the refusal of the mayor (and his supporters) to allow...

2010: running for deputy mayor?

Well, I guess the cat's out of the bag, metaphorically speaking. I was asked by John Edwards of the Connection if I planned to run next year, and my comments were at the forefront of...
