Trying to get up and running

Grumble. Grumble. Nothing is simple. Should be able to simply upload and run the damn thing and have it work first time. Instead I waste time tinkering, setting permissions, tweakings skins, checking files... grrrr....

But after what seems more like a difficult intellectual bowel movement than a simple upgrade, it seems to be working... now we'll have to see what IPS hath wrought...

Scuppered with problems - database corrupt, couldn't log in to the admin functions (fortunately I have a sympathetic tech at the server), frustrating not being able to fix something from a distance... but I think it's stable...

Update, 2006: It's difficult to remember how much work this was to get running, how clumsy and awkward I felt. Now, several software generations later, a veteran of a few dozen updtaaes, patches and mod installations, I read this and wonder what all the fuss was about...

In spite of that "difficult intellectual bowel movement" well done for taking the initiative!! I don't know what the value add of these blog thingys is yet but I do know that I'll have to plagiarise that sentiment somewhere along the line in the future...

The value, from my perspective, is being able to ramble, rant, huff and puff freely, outside the forum structure, more in prose than in the short question-answer format of the board.

Blogs are longer-lived, more personal and better suited for essays, comments and larger ideas. And as a result, I will trim my forums soon to limit the number of categories (especially those in modest use or sometimes entirely ignored). It should make the board more focused, more valuable, and still give members a place to post their more considered thoughts.

It's also a storehouse where I can start placing some essays I've been working on for a while, before I build them into new pages. Perhaps get some responses and comments on them before I finally craft them into my web site.

In reality, this blog setup isn't really all that different from the forum's structure and layout. The main difference is that only members can post or comment, not guests.
