More meanderings

Blogs, eh? Back in the 17th century, the literati wrote diaries. Later, these became journals for public consumption (hence “journalists") and biographies (Boswell began that craze and has yet to be bested). They continued into the late 19th century, but diarists devolved with technology in the 20th century, and more autobiographers emerged. Now the diarists are returning with blogs…. will we appreciate them as much, read them with nostagia, a century from now?

Not sure if this is what I want to do - blogging - who has the time, patience or interest? If everyone is a blogger, why bother? It starts to become a bit of a circle jerk, each of us commenting on the other’s blog, syndicating one another’s rants, crossed linked back and forth in a tight collection of self-minded geeks who can’t pry themselves away from the monitor…

I’m no longer a young geek. Hell, if I sold my motorcycle last June because I had so little time to ride, what makes me think I can keep up a blog with any level of consistency (let alone quality)? There’s so much to do, so little time…

Quid pro qui
And quid pro quo
So little time
So much to know

(The Nowhere Man, Yellow Submarine, the Beatles)

But I’ll test this system, and try it out fore use on my own forum (you're here: the Mumpsimous Forum - feel free to join, post, etc.). I investigated other alternatives, but since I run IPB already, a system that meshes well with the existing database/skins/mods seemed appropriate.

On a tangent: most of the Hollywood biographies/autobiographies are of the “who cares” or “who needs this” sort - and so are a lot of blogs. Can I or my forum members avoid that digital midden? Have to see what we can put together… otherwise it’ll be just another “Oh yeah/oh well/zzzzz….” site.

My immediate thought about this system is that it’s difficult to tell the blog from the board. The point, I think, is to stand apart from the madding crowd. But we'll have to see how members use it to say if it was worth the expense...
