Okay, the Bullet is back home, running and all indications suggest that the problems are solved. The engine wasn't racing as it had been, seems to start fine, and ran about as well as it might be expected to run when I brought it home, Saturday.
I hope to take it for a longer run around the backroads perhaps this week, perhaps next weekend. Give it an hour or two's work, let it stretch itself and show me it's working up to snuff.
July 30/05: Had Topper* out yesterday for a little toodle around town. No serious problems. A little engine racing, but it subsided. Easier to click from 2nd to neutral than from 1st to neutral with the engine running. Did about 10-12 kms each day without any indication of any serious problems.
Tiny bit of seepage from the drain bolt and the carb bowl drain - tightened both and will check tomorrow. Everything else seems to work fine. Well, as fine as a Bullet can get.
Sure, it's slow, cantankerous and cranky - but so am I. That's a perfect match! Now if only I could find the time to ride...
*Topper: Named after the Dog From Hell, we owned a few years back. Neurotic, perhaps psychotic, Welsh Corgi. Beautiful dog, but difficult, cantakerous, and seriously shy of the grey matter. Slightly less trainable than a flower pot. As obedient as a two-by-four. Suffered from a variety of ailments, not the least of which was acute separation anxiety. Chewed everything, from shoes to sofas to woodwork to door knobs, to rugs and more. Broke housetraining almost daily. He went back to the breeder after the worst year we ever had with any pet Thank the Seven Gods for cats.
