I was at Town Hall last week changing how my taxes are paid, and got te latest figures on my 2010 taxes. The total increased more than $200 over 2009 That's almost 6%. That's a big increase. Our taxes are now more than $3,600 a year on a small house that's on a half-size town lot. Pretty steep.
Has anyone else got their tax totals and can compare them with 2009? I'd like to see how much they went up for others.
The"average" tax increase that always gets mentioned is actually somewhat misleading and I've always found that my taxes go up a lot more than what is noted. In this case, it's roughly six percent, considerably more than the figures released by the treasurer a couple of weeks back.
Although my assessment also went up - thanks to those folks at MPAC - it didn't go up by six percent. I have to go back to Town hall to get the unexpected increase in my taxes explained. What with the HST about to kick Ontarians in our collective arses next week, we have to be very careful about our money these days.

It points to the flaw in MPAC's assessment strategy, too. No matter what municipalties attempt to do to keep taxes down, the always-rising asssessment in MPAC's model means wew pay more and more taxes anyway.
