Breaking news - a new mayor for Collingwood!

Mayor Chris Carrier is NOT running for re-election as mayor. Another "I told you so" moment. I've been saying he wouldn't run again for the last few months. In fact I had a long conversation with a local developer last night during which we debated this very issue.

I expect some of you are already breaking out in a chorus of "Ding, dong, the witch is dead..."

However, the mayor did say he planned to run for the federal Conservative candidate - where I suppose hopes to do to the riding what he did to the town.

That poses some interesting questions - will his past behaviour at the County, where I'm told he has alienated a lot of his fellow County reps and some County staff - hinder his chances federally? Will the local Conservatives side with a contentious, controversial, and often curt mayor, or with the proposed candidate, Dr. Kellie Leitch, a loquacious, well-spoken, and apparently popular orthopedic surgeon?

I heard the news on the Peak FM this morning. The mayor has not seen fit to inform the rest of council, yet. I got forwarded a copy of an email of the announcement that went through a tortuous e-path that started from Mycollingwood.ca and after several in-between forwards, ended up in my in-box. It doesn't seem to have been sent directly by the mayor, nor sent to to any local press or members of council, but perhaps that's just the routing my copy went through.

And I see Scoop beat me to the punch in breaking this news, but in a surprisingly restrained manner, given the relationship between the mayor and the media this term.

Ding dong the Witch is dead....
DdtWid....

hahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaa

...and Sandra Cooper will be the new Mayor..
I think Sandra would have won whether Chris had run or not. With her we get Admiral Collingwood Place, patios restored to their rightful place, good common sense and respect for citizen input.

Can anyone stop those ridiculous, costly roundabouts that are neither needed nor wanted? There is NO traffic study indicating their viability on High Street.
Story in the Collingwood Connection:

Quote

"I achieved most of the goals I have set," he said. "I am ready for it. I am going to ask folks to put on a different set of lenses and ask is he the guy to lead us in Simcoe Grey? I think so."

Which goals? Making sure the downtown anchor project didn't go ahead? Making sure the town wasted spent $428,000 in legal fees chasing his battle against educational development charges - to whose benefit? - even after we lost the case? Making sure 500,000 sq. ft. of west-end commercial sprawl got approved despite arguments this town cannot possibly absorb that much commercial space without hurting existing businesses? Making sure the highway speed was reduced without a public meeting? Making sure we didn't have a public meeting to debate a ward system or mail-in ballots? I could go on...
