A marketing idea for Collingwood and the downtown

I came across a marketing concept when I was last in Toronto and I think it could work very well here for both Collingwood and the BIA. Most of us are already familiar with the standard promotion racks that hold flyers and cards for local events, places to visit, visitor maps and so on. This is more of a downsized version, but in many ways more effective. Here's a typical card, front and back:

What I saw in the hotel was a peg board with small cards on it. There were 100 or more different cards displayed in an area that the traditional rack card (3.66" x 8.5") could only display less than a quarter that number.

Each card is approx. 2.25" wide by 3.35" tall (a standard business card is 2" x 3.5"). Each card is punched with a small hole at the top so it can be hung on a peg (or put in a small pocket on a different sort of display, such as one designed for business cards). The paper is a nice coated stock (both sides), perhaps 10pt or even 8pt thick, but fairly stiff.

Each card is in full colour. There is a colour band across the top and bottom of both sides that identifies the type of information on the card, and a colour code is on the rack itself. For example, museums or heritage sites are olive green. Food and restaurants are bright red.

There is a picture on the forward facing side, with some text to describe what's being promoted. On the back is more description, a map, contact information, special offers and so on. Very small, and brief, but a lot of stuff is packed into each card. I scanned a few of them. Here are some fronts and backs:

I know from my own experience how reluctant business owners are to accept the larger card racks because they take up so much space. But this mini-card rack could be easily fit into any store. And the little cards are much easy to carry around than the larger rack cards and brochures.

It could be used not only to promote town events, sites and activities, but also local shopping and dining. If these racks were in downtown and First Street stores and restaurants, visitors and residents alike could see what we have to offer, and maybe discover something about Collingwood they hadn't known before.

The cards come from Minicardscanada.com. You can find out more about therm there. probably other companies producing the same sort of item, and perhaps our local printers could do them as well. I think it's a concept worth investigating.

Good thinking. The mini-card promotion concept would be great for Collingwood and area. Hopefully the new Collingwood Council will support this idea.
