Chamber changes all-candidates' meeting

A significant change was made today to the Chamber's all-candidates' meeting, Sept. 22: council candidates have been bumped to 3:30 p.m., instead of the evening.

This will make it difficult for working people in this community to attend, including candidates themselves. Very unfortunate arrangement or council candidates, who also have to arrive before 3 p.m. to go through the prelims, but will likely have a much-reduced audience.

There was no confirmation that this abruptly-revised meeting would be televised on Rogers TV, as the later meeting will be (mayoral and deputy-mayoral candidates still speak at 7 p.m.)

The letter from the Chamber starts by shouting in all-caps at the readers, which makes this seem rather authoritarian (or at the very least poorly presented):

Quote

• CANDIDATES ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PUT UP OR DISPLAY SIGNS OF ANY KIND ON THE LEGION PROPERTY OR INSIDE THE LEGION.

• CANDIDATES ARE PERMITTED TO PASS OUT HANDOUTS OR PLACE THEM ON CHAIRS BUT YOU HAVE TO PICK UP ALL OF YOUR MATERIAL THAT IS LEFT OVER FOLLOWING THE ALL CANDIDATES MEETING.

After the speeches, the "media panel" will be allowed to pose questions. Audience questions apparently have to be pre-written and given to the moderator in advance. The moderator then chooses which questions to ask of the candidates.

SNEAKY SNEAKY.
Under a ward system, I would be able to go to a smaller meeting (two or three candidates) at a convenient time and listen to each canditate discuss their positions (at length and in detail). Instead I will get a couple of minutes of soundbite from each candidate. Oh wait! I wont even get that, because I'll be at work while the meeting is held. Instead I'll just have to pick the least objectionable individuals from the list of incumbents. I guess this is what Council had in mind when it voted against a ward system.

Ah, the lesser-of-the-evils method of choosing politicians... but of course without being able to hear them or talk with them, how can you decide from just a list of names?
My friend said he is voting for only those people who were not part of our present council. I tried to tell him that he'd be throwing the baby out with the bath water, we need some experience. He said he's voting for Rick because Rick has had enough experience to help guide the ship. My friend is ticked.
Something that ticks me is that some candidates are not planning on doing any knocking on doors. What's up with that??
