Adult chess club starts at Library, Oct. 26

A new chess club for players 18 or older will start at the Collingwood Public Library, October 26, from 6 p.m. It will every meet Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. from that date. There is no charge to join or to play. All levels of players are welcome.

The club will initially be just for social playing - fun, kibitzing and challenges. If the membership grows enough and people want it, the organizers will look into membership with the Canadian Chess Federation to allow ratings and rated tournaments in future. The organizers will also look into chess lessons or training if enough people ask for them.

Chess sets, clocks, videos and books are all welcome donations. The Library has several chess sets for the youth chess club, but more would be appreciated (especially weighted, tournament-size sets). Chess clocks are also in demand for tournaments and timed games. Contact the Library at 445-1571 for more information about donating.

Food and beverages will not be available in the Library at the start, but there are coffee and tea shops downtown, within two blocks of the Library. In future, if members request it, tea and coffee may be made available at a modest price.

Tim denBok is the lead organizer and can be reached at 444-5516. I am a volunteer with Tim, trying to help the club get going. I have also donated several chess books to the Library and have another dozen or so on order to add to the Library's collection.
