Student vote shows different results

I found a link to the student vote for the municipal elections posted on Facebook today, and the results are interesting - a little disappointing to me, too. Gave me something to think about, too, and about my own name recognition among students and youth.

These results are from the local elementary schools, not the high schools, so there may be a lot of input from parents and teachers that colour the results. Some of the results reflect what happened, others are quite different. One council candidate is not even listed in the results, but her absence is not explained.

Makes me wonder what was behind the name recognition, makes me wonder why the kids chose some candidates and not others. And what does anyone have to work at getting more recognition among youth (and most likely their parents)?

Here are the results from this site, in order, with the actual standings in parentheses after the student vote figure:

Mayor:
  • Sandra Cooper 191 (1)
  • Mike Young 76 (2)
  • Kathy Jeffery 62 (3)
  • Raymond Thomas Branget 17 (5)
  • Eammon D Paterson 9 (4)
Deputy Mayor:

  • Rick Lloyd 252 (1)
  • Norman Sandberg 50 (2)
Council:

  • Joe Gardhouse 82 (7)
  • Kevin Lloyd 61 (2)
  • Mike Edwards 42 (1)
  • Keith Hull 36 (4)
  • Tim McNabb 33 (12)
  • Sonny Foley 32 (14)
  • Dale West 31 (5)
  • Dale Hogg 30 (9)
  • Ian Chadwick 26 (3)
  • Wendy McKenzie 22 (11)
  • Dave Labelle 18 (15)
  • David Cubitt 18 (16)
  • Sandy Cunningham 18 (6)
  • Cheryl Nicholls Jones 17 (13)
  • Michael Christie 14 (10)
  • Trevor Henson 13 (19)
  • Norman Minnikin 11 (20)
  • Nello Torti 10 (21)
  • Irene Irving-Matwijec 7 (18)
  • John Kitchen 5 (17)
  • Donna Mansfield (8 - not listed in results)
That would be a very different council for sure! I'm glad the results were a little different (especially in my case) - because I think we have an excellent council for 2010-14 and I'm not sure the student-selected council would be nearly as effective.

To see Collingwood's results, check studentvote.ca. You can also find the results from other municipalities there. The local results from the town's site are here.
