Cambridge’s Anti-Idling By-law Enforcement Begins December 1st

From the Municipal Information Network. While we have an anti-idling bylaw, I have yet to find out how many (if any) tickets have been given out. I'll ask again next term.

Cambridge, November 23, 2010 - Starting next month, Parking Enforcement Officers at the City of Cambridge will issue $40 tickets related to the new Anti-idling By-law (164-09).This follows an extensive educational period that included warnings and information campaigns to help share the new change with the community. The new by-law is part of the comprehensive sustainable environmental initiatives undertaken by the City of Cambridge.

“While the by-law was approved by Cambridge City Council last December, there was a public education period that enabled us to spread the word, engage our community groups and share the details about the by-law before we started issuing tickets,” said Dave Maidment, Manager of Parking Operations.

The by-law puts into effect a one minute idling limit at key areas within the City where air quality improvements can be most beneficial – these are zones at schools and the highly pedestrian civic square area around City Hall. The ‘School No Idling Zone’ covers all Cambridge schools within the Public and Catholic school boards and includes the parking lots as well as the adjacent streets. The ‘City Hall No Idling Zone’ encompasses the buildings, adjacent streets, and parking lots associated with City Hall located at 40 Dickson Street. The only exemptions to the by-law are for engaged emergency vehicles, work vehicles with specialized machinery dependent upon a running engine, and vehicles assisting with wheelchair / mobility assisted devices and lifts.Extreme weather temperatures are not something that would be exempt under the by-law guidelines.

To serve as a reminder and identify the areas in which the by-law will be enforced, ‘No Idling Zone’ signs are in place.
