Election results for 2011

Conservative: 167 (majority and a stunning win, 39.6% of the popular vote)
NDP: 102 (now the official opposition for the 1st time, 30.6% of the popular vote)
Liberal: 34 (a huge drop and a crushing defeat for Ignatieff and the Libs; 18.9%)
Bloc Quebecois: 4 (collapse, and not even an official party now; 6%)
Green: 1 (first victory, but popular vote dropped from 7% last election to 4.8%)

What a night. Who would have guessed the Tories would win large like that? Pollsters and pundists were so wrong. Ignatieff didn't even win his own seat back, nor did Duceppe (who resigned last night as party leader). Will Ignatieff stay or step down? Is Bob Rae waiting to step into his shoes?

Layton is ecstatic over the NDP's growth, but it's mostly in volatile Quebec where he will have to prove himself.

Can the Greens turn their first win into something bigger in four years?

Interesting times ahead... results here.

Locally, Kellie Leitch, Conservative, steam-rolled over her opposition, capturing almost 50% of the votes (49.4%) with 31,784 votes. Second was Austin (NDP) at 11,194 (17.4%), Guergis (independent) at third with 8,620 (13.4%) and Liberal Smardenka traing at fourth with 8,213 (12.8%). Greens came fifth at 3,482 (5.4%) and the fringe parties took just over 1,000 votes together. See here.

Pretty much as expected locally, but nationally, the pundists and pollsters were wrong about the Tories in a big way. Many guess the NDP would surge ahead.

More to come.
