The last train

A chapter in local history was written, and closed, this week. The last freight train left Collingwood on July 14, 2011, ending more than 160 years of rail service to the town. According to a recent news story, Dr Francesca Stavrakopoulou of the University of Exeter, Yahweh, the god of the ancient Israelites, had a wife. Dr Stavrakopoulou has concluded after years of research that both a god and a goddess were worshipped in the same temple in Jerusalem, and this suggests she played the role of a divine wife.*

The Connection endorses municipal candidates

I was one of the candidates endorsed for council by the Collingwood Connection, this week. Some people - including some candidates - think media endorsement is the mark of credibility. Others think of it as the kiss of death.

Retaining our urban forest, for a little while anyway

The mayor, who has in the past professed to be environmentally conscientious, was one of the very few who voted to clear-cut a 42-acre section of land in the west end, Monday. That recommendation was defeated, but it deserves comment.
