The mayoralty race kicked off by Sandra Cooper

Icon 6 Comments
The mayoralty race got started today (Sunday) when Deputy Mayor Sandra Cooper held a meet-and-greet at the Legion. And if that meeting was an indication of the trend among local voters, I'd suggest Sandra already has a lengthy lead against her competition.

Originally booked for the Legion's small room, organizers nervously took a last-minute chance and booked the larger room, but had only set up about half the room with chairs and tables, hoping for a modest turn out. By the time Sandra spoke to the crowd, tables and chairs had been shuffled out of storage to fill the room, with very few left empty. It was a full audience.

And it wasn't just the usual circle of friends and family around her. There were a lot of supporters,...

The BIA's Titanic meets the town's iceberg

Icon 2 Comments
By now, most readers will be aware of the resignation of the BIA's chair over the ongoing dispute between the organization and the town. That head butting stems from a disagreement over the terms and conditions in an agreement jointly signed by the town and BIA and the province.

I've written about some of this previously, but, of course not the contentious hissing and spitting that went on in three in camera meetings when the matter was raised with council. Council has not met with the BIA board, although the chair met with the mayor twice, once after the BIA's letter to the province had been sent, then again after the BIA's letter to its members was sent.

You can read about the resignation on the ...

Albatrosses and election 2010

Icon 5 Comments
An uncredited photo from the mayor's news "blog": two election hopefuls and their albatross. Looks like a big, happy family. Once upon a time, it was. The two councillors beside him were ardent supporters of the mayor and pretty much followed his lead back when this council was newly elected. You could basically count on a six-three vote back then. What the mayor wanted, the mayor got. I was, of course, one of the three on the losing side of many fights.

Breaking news - a new mayor for Collingwood!

Icon 3 Comments
Mayor Chris Carrier is NOT running for re-election as mayor. Another "I told you so" moment. I've been saying he wouldn't run again for the last few months. In fact I had a long conversation with a local developer last night during which we debated this very issue.

I expect some of you are already breaking out in a chorus of "Ding, dong, the witch is dead..."

However, the mayor did say he planned to run for the federal Conservative candidate - where I suppose hopes to do to the riding what he did to the town.

That poses some interesting questions - will his past behaviour at the County, where I'm told he has alienated a lot of his fellow County reps and some County staff - hinder his chances federally?...

BIA, town still at loggerheads over broken contract, BIA rep challenged

Icon 5 Comments
Just before we went in camera, Monday, I asked Councillor Jeffrey if she had voted to pull the the BIA out of the contract it signed with the town. She said yes and indicated it was a unanimous vote (although it was not made clear who was at that meeting).

At that point, the mayor took over and shoved the rest of the discussion behind closed doors.

While some of that heated debate probably belonged there, how someone voted in a public meeting did not. I think that section should have been held in public. Instead we had an angry 90-plus minute "discussion" about it behind closed doors.

The public only knows, because I asked and she answered before we went in camera, that council's representative on the BIA - Kathy Jeffrey...

What's with the BIA?

Icon Leave Comment
What's up with the BIA these days? As a previously ardent supporter of the BIA, the organization's latest moves have both confounded and bothered me. I'm still a supporter of the downtown merchants, but my respect for the executive has dropped a few notches of late. *

Should Mayor Carrier seek a second term?

No surprise, but I voted no. Last time I checked (late Tuesday night), it was 85% against.

No pancake breakfast on Canada Day

Icon 8 Comments
I just learned that the traditional pancake breakfast will not be taking place downtown on Canada Day this year. Council wasn't informed of this change, nor was council even asked whether or not we wanted to participate. It was just cancelled.

I only found out because an email meant for Helena Guergis' office was misrouted to my inbox. Our MP had already sent out an information flyer about Canada Day events mentioning the pancake breakfast. She's wrong, but I can understand the confusion. For the past decade or two, it has been held here. And hundreds of residents and visitors have enjoyed a low-cost breakfast courtesy of the town. Helena usually joined us at the grill for an hour or two.

Now it isn't happening and I have...

Grand opening of the Collingwood Public Library

Icon Leave Comment
I attended the grand opening of the Collingwood Public Library, noon, Thursday, May 27, just before I drove t the FCM convention. It was a glorious day, and not merely for the weather, but because it was the culmination of years of effort by library boards, ongoing ever since I was first appointed to the board, back in 1991. All of the years of work and lobbying paid off, Thursday. Several hundred people turned out for the grand opening.

But for all the pomp and circumstance in the ceremony, I had to shake my head at the hypocrisy.

Newspaper story confusing about patio move

Icon 11 Comments
I've been getting some calls about the headline story in today's Collingwood Connection. Seems to some people the opening is murky about who voted for what. Unless you were there, it may not be very clear. The newspaper reported:

Okay, it does see a bit obfuscatory. Let's see if I can untangle that.

Councillor Edwards made the motion to keep the patios next to the buildings. I seconded his motion. Mayor Carrier and Deputy Mayor Cooper also voted to keep the patios beside the buildings. So the four of us were IN FAVOUR of keeping the patios where they were last year: beside the buildings. We lost.

Councillors Jeffrey, Sandberg, Labelle, McNabb and Foley voted against Mike's motion. They want to move the patios to the...

Public input on ward systems shut out again

Icon Leave Comment
The chance for public input into the local election system was shut down last night by Collingwood Council in a 7-2 vote. The mayor and Councillors Edwards, Sandberg, Jeffrey, Foley, McNabb and Labelle voted no.

I had proposed a referendum question for the 2010 municipal ballot that read, "Are you in favour of having a "ward" system as the method of electing future Town

Back at you: Assaff responds to Carrier's media release

Icon 1 Comments
I won't comment on this, the latest broadside in the ongoing war of words between Carrier and Assaff over the repeal of the approvals for the downtown Admiral Collingwood development. I have not changed anything of the following, merely reproduced what was sent to me by email.

Suffice to say the text in bold is Steve's response to the mayor's media release comments, which are in Roman text.

War of words: Carrier vs Assaff continues

Icon 7 Comments
Got an email late yesterday with the mayor's comments in response to Steve Assaff's comments on the mayor's comments about the Admiral Collingwood development... got that? Anyway, I got the press release the mayor sent from an outside source, since it appears council and staff wasn't copied with it.

The mayor sent out his "media release" from his business office email address. So is this an 'official' response or a personal one? It says "Mayor Chris Carrier Responds..." but because of the source and the select audience of recipients, should the media treat it as a personal or an official comment? Can an individual rather than the head of council send out a "media release" and be taken...

Referendum: 2010

Icon 3 Comments
I plan to bring a notice of motion to the table, Monday night, asking for a referendum question to be added to the 2010 ballot.

My motion will be to request that the 2010 ballot include the question, "Should Collingwood implement a ward system for future municipal elections?"

Given the refusal of the mayor (and his supporters) to allow public input into the debate over a ward system or into the debate over the method of balloting (mail-in versus walk-in) when both were brought to the council table, earlier, I don't really expect it to be passed. After all, the majority of members of council, including the mayor, owe their success at the table to the efforts of special interest group lobbying. That sort of effort would be...

Throwing stones?

Icon Leave Comment
You have to shake your head and wonder, some days. Today was one for me. There on the front page of the EB is a quote from the mayor aimed right at me:

So what does he then go on to do in the story? That's right: throw those proverbial stones at me. Ironic? Perhaps just a little...

Ah, so, according to the mayor, releasing figures about publicly-funded legal expenses is campaigning. I suppose that means residents shouldn't be told how council spends their tax dollars*...

So the mayor's now a blogger...

After three years of enduring frequent, snide and insulting comments from our mayor about local bloggers (me included), our mayor has decided to join us. That's right - the mayor has a blog.

Is his imitation the sincerest form of flattery? I doubt it.
