A marketing idea for Collingwood and the downtown

Icon 1 Comments
I came across a marketing concept when I was last in Toronto and I think it could work very well here for both Collingwood and the BIA. Most of us are already familiar with the standard promotion racks that hold flyers and cards for local events, places to visit, visitor maps and so on. This is more of a downsized version, but in many ways more effective. Here's a typical card, front and back:

GBAR's Adopt-a-thon a success

Icon 1 Comments
Dropped by the Georgian Bay Animal Rescue's August Adopt-a-thon, Saturday. While I don't have the totals yet, the event was very successful, and several cats were adopted. What we intended as a few minutes' visit stretched into an hour or more, once we entered the cat room.

Our growing culinary landscape

Icon 6 Comments
I think the only thing I ever really missed about the city when I moved up here was the variety of food we had within walking distance of our house in Toronto. We could walk to Vietnamese, Japanese, Indian, Greek, Korean, Italian and Szechuan restaurants, all within 10-15 minutes of home. A little further, but still not very far, we had Thai, Mexican, Lebanese, Moroccan and new-age vegetarian.

Today in Collingwood, we can walk to almost as wide a variety of national and international tastes. This town has come a long way in the past 20 years, in terms of its culinary landscape. Pizzas, doughnuts, burgers and pasta dominated it when we first arrived. Now our choices are very broad and urbane, although they are still with us.

Adult chess club in Collingwood this fall

Icon Leave Comment
Just a heads up for those readers who enjoy playing chess, and like the ambiance of a chess club, with its social interaction. Tim DenBok is starting an adult chess club this fall at the Collingwood Library. It will meet weekly and, at least at the start, be no charge to join.

Should we collectively decide to join a national organization and become more formal (for those who want to move up the rungs of the rating ladder), a fee may be necessary, but that's for the future.

Tim already runs the very successful and popular chess club for kids...

Debunking psychics

Icon 2 Comments
Why aren't all psychics filthy rich? I mean, if you can predict the future, surely something as basic as the stock market's rise and fall should be a snap. Surely they can predict the winning lottery numbers, too. I never buy lottery tickets because there's always a lineup of psychics ahead of me, cashing in their winnings. No wonder there's never any money left for me...

Why don't all psychics drive BMWs and live in $3 million waterfront condos? Why do psychics get caught in traffic jams? Why do psychics lose bids on eBay? Would a psychic smoke of he or she could see the future with lung and other cancers?

There is an endless supply of such questions no one (especially not self-proclaimed psychics) can...

Wounded Warriors event a hit

Icon Leave Comment
Paul Thurston, of Thurst's Cycle, pulled off his third annual Riders With a Cause/Wounded Warriors event today, with a bigger crowd than ever before. More than 200 bikes joined his Sunday morning ride with the Armed Forces vehicles leading. When they got back to the Pine Street parking lot, the place was full of bikes, soldiers, and visitors. I was impressed by both the number of people participating and the age range - from pre-teens to seniors.

The show 'n shine event had about 40 bikes registered, perhaps more; the silent auction had dozens of items, and there was live music, vendors, a fashion show and, of course, the Admiral's Post patio for beer and food. The Post, of course, is on private property so is not bound by the...

How to vote in the upcoming municipal election

Icon Leave Comment
No, I won't tell you who you should vote for. This is rather a reminder to everyone of how the process works. I'll post something like this again closer to the election.

First: you should vote. It's not mandatory, but it is a right you should not treat lightly, even in municipal elections.

Second: it's another mail-in ballot (council would neither hear of any alternative nor allow a public discussion of any options - just like council refused to hold public meetings on a ward system).

The ballots will be mailed out in early October.

You have to make your selections on one piece of paper (the ballot), then seal it inside the provided envelope.

Next you sign another piece that says you're really you (like anyone...

Music, music everywhere

Last week we had the chance to enjoy two really different types of music. Wednesday we went to the Station (aka the museum) for the weekly Jazz at the Station event. We watched Bobby Dean Blackburn, a great R&B and jazz pianist/vocalist with a drummer and two sax players. Free event, and well-attended, although Frank McNulty told me the crowd of 200-250 was lower than their usual 300-350 group.

A generally older crowd, and a bit sedate (although a group of mouthy 10-12 year-olds ran through the audience shouting obscenities during the performance). Nothing, of course, compared to the much larger crowd of several thousand that attended the annual street event downtown for the Elvis Festival:

Kids' chess club at Collingwood Library

Icon 3 Comments
One of the lesser know successes in town is a small but rapidly growing chess club for kids and teens aged 7 to 18. Run by Tim denBok, this group meets every Thursday at the Collingwood Public Library, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. It's no cost to join, but participants have to register (call 444-5516).

Local sports always get a lot of attention and recognition. Chess, like the arts and most intellectual activities, get less. Sometimes a lot less.

We have the mayor's golf tournament every year, but never the mayor's chess tournament (something I proposed back in 2008...

Another successful year for Mother (of all yard Sales)

Icon 1 Comments
Used to be yard sales and garage sales were attended by people looking to buy something for themselves. Seems nowadays a lot of the people milling about, picking over the tables, are looking for something to sell.

I got that impression from again working this year's Mother of All Yard Sales...

Many cats at the GBAR shelter need loving homes

Icon Leave Comment

We spent more than two hours, Saturday, in the cat rooms at the new Georgian Bay Animal Rescue shelter, on the Tenth Line in Collingwood. GBAR has an unusual concept - open rooms, not individual cages. That way cats can socialize, play, move about, interact with each other and with visitors.

We had a friend up from Guelph over the weekend - another cat lover - and I'm not sure what moved us to take him to the shelter, but it became the highlight of his visit. Well, actually adopting the little cat you see at the left was the highlight. But the visit was entertaining, too.

There are two cat rooms at the shelter: the large or main room, and a smaller 'quiet' room. I've posted a couple of photos of the main room in ...

Litterville

Icon Leave Comment
Is it just me, or is this town dirtier this spring than it's ever been? There's litter everywhere. And are there more people than ever not picking up after their dogs? Sure seems that way.

I know spring is usually a messy time, when the snow melts and exposes the debris that's been buried. And the gusts of spring often make the litter seem more ubiquitous by spreading it around. But that doesn't account for what seems to be a growing volume of garbage on the streets. This spring it just seems there's a lot more litter around than usual.

On the streets where I walk my dog, I've noticed more junk on the boulevard - usually coffee cups, pop cans, candy wrappers, high-energy drink cans and fast food containers. Most...

So the mayor's now a blogger...

Icon 4 Comments
After three years of enduring frequent, snide and insulting comments from our mayor about local bloggers (me included), our mayor has decided to join us. That's right - the mayor has a blog.

Is his imitation the sincerest form of flattery? I doubt it.

Downtown patios, again

An impassioned presentation on the benefits of moving the downtown restaurant patios to the curbside, last night, failed to move me. I still think it's a bad idea and I haven't heard any comments from the restaurant owners to suggest anything said last night has relieved their concerns*...

A confederacy of dunces

I'm stupid. Or perhaps, if you want to split semantic hairs, my decisions are stupid. But I'm not at all sure how I can be separated from my decisions, intellectually speaking. Non cogito, ergo bardus - I don't think, therefore I'm stupid.

At least that's the opinion of Councillor Foley, expressed at council, Monday, and reiterated in an article in The Enterprise Bulletin...
