Adult chess club in Collingwood this fall

Just a heads up for those readers who enjoy playing chess, and like the ambiance of a chess club, with its social interaction. Tim DenBok is starting an adult chess club this fall at the Collingwood Library. It will meet weekly and, at least at the start, be no charge to join.

Should we collectively decide to join a national organization and become more formal (for those who want to move up the rungs of the rating ladder), a fee may be necessary, but that's for the future.

Tim already runs the very successful and popular chess club for kids...

World chess championship: is it getting duller?

Is it just me, or is the current World Chess Championship between title-holder Viswanathan Anand and higher-ranked challenger Veselin Topalov not as exciting nor the games as scintillating as championship matches in the past?

The match is being held in Bulgaria - Topalov's home country - which is in itself highly suspect. Shouldn't it be in a neutral country? The match organizers seem rather biased.

As a prime example of their bias, Anand was stranded in Frankfurt when all air travel was disrupted by the volcanic ash emissions from Eyjafjallajökull...

Kids' chess club at Collingwood Library

One of the lesser know successes in town is a small but rapidly growing chess club for kids and teens aged 7 to 18. Run by Tim denBok, this group meets every Thursday at the Collingwood Public Library, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. It's no cost to join, but participants have to register (call 444-5516).

Local sports always get a lot of attention and recognition. Chess, like the arts and most intellectual activities, get less. Sometimes a lot less.

We have the mayor's golf tournament every year, but never the mayor's chess tournament (something I proposed back in 2008...
