In search of a good $20 dollar bottle, I have tried the following

JC Tradicional - I like this one best so far. A bit of a bite but decent taste and consistency.
Souza Hornitos - OK for margi's but I like the JC better for shots.
Don Alejo Rep - Pretty good but , something about the finish is a bit off to me.

Haven't tried the Quita Penas rep, but for $21.00 a liter at high times it looks interesting. I know at $20.00 it wont stand up to favorites like El Tesoro, Chinaco, ect. but sometimes you don't want to drop half or all of a Ben Franklin. Any good suggestions at this price point would be appreciated.
Muchos Gracias

You also may want to look for the 30-30 reposado. I has some bite but it is not a "heavy" tequila. It is light and tasty.

For $20, there is also the Don Julio Blanco, which I like very much for that price.

Salud!

Around $20, I'll vote for the Pueblo Viejo reposado, which I picked up for $22 recently.

Albertsons sells the Don Viejo reposado for $25, which to me, is worth the extra $3.

Otherwise, its supermarket closeouts. Ive found some great deals at Ralphs and Albertsons, including:

Aguila Reposado (at Ralphs for $20)
Herradura Anejo (At Ralphs for $25)
Jose Cuervo Anejo (Albertsons for $22)
Because of that damned orange!

The Pueblo Viejo rep is $18.00 at hi times, I will be trying that. I will keep my eye out for the close outs (You scored some sweet deals). Have not seen 30-30 anywhere. Don Julio Blanco must be different from the silver for $20.00?

Don Julio Blanco=Don Julio Silver
I have seen it for $20-25 at different locations.

Haven't tried it myself, but D Los Altos blanco is a few pennies below $20 at Hi Times.

Found another one at Hi Times;
Dos Manos Añejo $19.98, it's 100% agave, and supposedly aged for a minimum of 2 years.

OK, I admit it, I bought it. I'm a Tequilawhore what can I say! For $20 bucks what the heck! I have tatsed it, but I will abstain from commenting, until my palate gets back in tune. For the past 2 weeks nothing has been tasting right, I am geting a little worried, even my all time favorites are off.

I hope you get your taste buds back soon. I have tried the Dos Manos and only found it to be ok. El Amo recently released a reposado ($21.00), I tried a bottle over the weekend and found it to be pretty decent. For $20 bucks it's a keeper! :t_up:

Agreed! :t_up:

Have had it before and quite tasty. I believe that when it was available in ABQ it was only $10-$15!

I've discussed Puerto Vallarta tequila before...Is 100% agave teqiula worth $35-50?, survey

There's a reason why I tried a $10 tequila! ;)

New on the ABQ scene....

Picked up a bottle of Campo Azul reposado. NOM 1416, Productos Finos de Agave--the same distillery as the illustrious Don Nacho tequila--but not the same owners of the brand.

For a 100% de Agave, the reposado is versatile enough for sipping, and in a margarita.

And for $20.99, you can drink it all day! :P

I am so happy I found this forum. I never would have thought to go to Albertsons or Savon looking for a premium tequila I had never heard of but there it was Don Viejo :lmao: ... Thanks for the heads up! I was looking for more info on Don Viejo and ran across a couple of pics from the factory (looks like they were taken on a tour).

Pics of workers bottling Don Viejo Look towards the bottom of the page

Not much else available in the way of info except it is made at the La Cofradia distillery. Don't know if it is triple distilled but I figure it doesn't matter it's a great tequila for a great price! Thanks again!

How would any of you with experience with these brands rate them from best to worst?

1. D Los Altos blanco

2. Puerto Vallarta (blanco or repo)

3. Dos Manos blanco

4. Pueblo Viejo Repo

5. Campo Azul repo

I'm trolling the bottom-end these days..

Thanks!

Ohh Lippy, has it come to that? Just kidding, as I have been on the cheap myself more often than not. Well having identified myself, as a, at least part time "bottom feeder" :lmao: here is my input (IMO, of course)... D Los Altos... the blanco is great, crisp and very smooth, the reposado is bold and aggressive, and the anejo is, although light in color... long on flavor and a big "Bang for the Buck"! Puerto Vallarta is not offensive but as you might say "not worthy of your Daughters hand" (Ok I improvised on that comment but you get the idea)... Dos Manos... I have posted my thoughts on Dos Manos and will "let sleeping Tequilas lay" ... Campo Azul I have no experience with... ahh BUT Pueblo Viejo, now THAT is another story!!! The blanco and reposado are not note worthy (IMO) however, the Anejo is worth a "slow drive through the park"... it has a complexity I appreciate, especially in the "more affordable" tequilas... and I think it is underappreciated for a number of reasons. I recently opened a bottle I got on clearance a while back and the caramel overtones left an impression. Is it the best tequila money can buy... NO, BUT... it might just be among the best tequila you can buy with the money ($30)... there would be a battle with the D Los Altos Anejo VS the Pueblo Viejo... two very different tequilas in composition and attack, very close to the same price point. Could be a light heavyweight against a heavyweight... Rope-a-dope against footwork and hand speed... I propose this could be a battle you could describe in better detail... I would buy a ticket and sit ring side :t_up: Regards,
Tim

Thanks for taking the time to lay that out, Tim.

Looks like I'm down for an order of Pueblo Viejo at the very least.

In this order...

D'Los Altos (all three marques)...

Pueblo Viejo blanco...

A tie between Puerto Vallarta and Campo Azul...

Haven't even seen Dos Manos blanco here in ABQ, so...

I'd include 30-30 reposado and anejo. Very enjoyable! :t_up:

Thanks for the input, Mike. You were the one who originally turned me on to D' Los Altos so I was looking forward to hearing your opinions as these.

Jeez, I think I passed on both Casa Viejo and Puerto Vallarta at BevMo NUMEROUS times.. That Puerto bottle has an especially cheezy "label" design.. but, hey.. I'm more interested in the contents..

Thanks.

Try them if you must (and tell us what you think!), but I tend to think that you get sooo much more at ~$30 for blancos like El Tesoro and Fina Estampa than you will get at $15-20 with most of the brands you've listed (D Los Altos excepted). IMHO, if you buy a $20 for a bottle of tequila that doesn't really excite you, then you didn't save $10, you wasted $20.

I've had Puerto Vallarta repo. My friend paid $13 for it on sale. It was unoffensive but completely uninteresting. Deny it.

Went trolling through the dusty backroom of a very special and forgotten liquor store here in SF on Fri. I found a bottle of ET Silver (old white label) and picked up a bottle of "old batch" Pueblo Viejo blanco for $18.00. Taste test any day (minute?) now..

HiTimes is running a special on Aguila Reposado - $19.99.

I remember Mossy posting about it and liking it. Anybody else ever tried this? Is it drinkable straight? (I'm building up quite a collection of "mixers only" bottles!)
